Director - Multifamily/Residential

Job Description:

Manages overall studio operations, including management of all personnel within studio, overseeing work flow, quality control, staffing, and scheduling. Assists with business development and marketing efforts, including thought leadership efforts. Contributes to overall office leadership.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Schedule / assign appropriate staffing for projects
  • Mentor younger staff member
  • Handle minor human resource issues, or refer to others within the firm, as appropriate
  • Participate in personnel interviews for personnel to be added to studio
  • Conduct personnel reviews
  • Approve expenditures, vacations, etc.
  • Hold bi-weekly team meetings with entire studio – review project status
  • Manage and support studio staff in other ways, as needed
  • Interact with other Studio Leads in weekly schedule meetings to schedule staff for “loaning” to other studios
  • Development and empowerment of other key members of the studio for future leadership  positions
  • Accompanies Business Development lead on meetings with potential clients when projects become specific
  • Champion, define approach & staff needed, review and collaborate on marketing proposals
  • Develop relationships with new clients and maintain relationships with existing clients with retention being tracked
  • Write proposals and/or review those written by their PMs
  • Create project plans and schedules or review those created by PMs
  • Assign and prioritize staffing on projects within the Studio
  • Review & approve invoicing in conjunction with PMs/Partners
  • Assist accounting with aged invoices
  • Review final invoices
  • Keep track of consultant relationships and obligations on projects
  • Coordinate insurance requirements of projects with Principal
  • Update executive group monthly on overall status of the studio/specific project issues
  • Bridge from proposal (promises) to execution (process & deliverables)
  • Ensure appropriate design approach
  • Ensure appropriate delivery approach
  • Responsible for signing/sealing all drawing sets within their studio
  • Review project story-boards created by PMs
  • Attend early / occasional project meetings for large or important projects - influence direction
  • Ensure or provide baseline code consultations and reviews
  • Ensure QA/QC reviews of drawings and specifications
  • Ensure consistent quality of deliverables – frequent check-ins with team & final reviews
  • Assist with production where appropriate and/or required
  • Attend conferences & other professional meetings / opportunities
  • Write white papers, blogs, articles for professional publications
  • Engage in public speaking opportunities
  • Engage in social & professional groups as appropriate to acting as community leader
  • Use marketing avenues & social media as an outlet for design & construction leadership

Qualifications/Knowledge/Skills

  • Required education and experience: B. Arch from an accredited program; 8 years experience as PM or PC in architecture firm or construction company; Architectural licensure
  • Preferred education and experience: M.Arch

  • Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office
  • High level of proficiency in building code as applicable to each project
  • Strong problem solving skills, communication skills, leadership skills, and mentorship skills
  • Ability to work under pressure of tight deadlines
